The Master’s Degree in Arts Management: Music, Theatre and Dance is exclusive to the Complutense University of Madrid (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) through its Institute of Musical Sciences (Instituto Complutense de Ciencias Musicales - ICCMU). It is the only Master’s specialising in music and performing arts management in Spain. The degree was set up in 1992 as a response to the large-scale changes and future challenges perceived in arts management, which demanded a complete overhaul of contents, techniques and procedures.
Today, what was initially a pioneering attempt to provide rigorous training in a new profession has become a reference in the training of arts managers in Spain. This can be witnessed in the work carried out by all those who have undertaken the degree and now integrate some of the most important cultural organisations in the country; furthermore, the course has received an excellent evaluation from experts in postgraduate education.*
The institutions responsible for its creation –the Spanish Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers (Sociedad General de Autores y Editores - SGAE) the Ministry of Culture’s National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música - INAEM), and the Department of Education for the Community of Madrid (Consejería de Educación de la Comunidad de Madrid)–, which have supported this course from the outset, together with a team of highly-qualified lecturers, and a multidisciplinary curriculum combining theoretical and applied knowledge, management techniques and artistic experiences, have all helped consolidate the degree’s considerable reputation.
Since 1992, every effort has been made to meet the training needs of students undertaking the course. For those who wish to continue their studies, the degree helps to systematise and optimise the tasks they already carry out in their jobs, as well as expand, revise and up-date their knowledge. For those embarking on a career in the arts, the degree offers a solid and comprehensive formation, opening doors towards a professional career in this sector. In order to satisfy such diverse expectations, our preferred teaching methods focus on developing knowledge, skills and abilities that give each student the tools required to meet the responses of a sector characterised by its considerable dynamism and rhythm of change.
